How do we transform workplaces into environments where employees experience their work as meaningful and their teams as conducive to learning? We consider why psychological safety is a foundation for engagement, innovation, and high performance, and what leaders at all levels can do to help create it.

By shifting from a focus on engagement surveys and other metrics to action-oriented strategies that engage employees in assessing and improving their lived experience of work, people leaders at all levels can help build and manage a system in which employees co-create solutions to ongoing problems. Evidence from research and case studies supports the power of a mindset shift from measuring engagement to helping every employee engage fully in meaningful work in a positive, connected community. Ultimately, a learning organization is built not by measuring alone, but by making work better through better leadership and better systems.
