Most organisations still plan the part of the workforce they can see: headcount/FTEs. Yet 30–50% of real work flows through the Extended workforce: contractors, SOW vendors, gig platforms and, increasingly, AI agents. Featuring the author of the best-selling Strategic Workforce Planning Handbook David Edwards, this roundtable makes the case for whole-workforce SWP and introduces a framework for meeting business needs faster, more optimally and at lower cost. We’ll consider the Cost of Not Planning (CONP), add Cost of Labor to the HR lexicon, show how to practice smarter fulfilment and identify and track benefit. This is not dry theory. We’ve done this and we’ll share how we did it with you. You’ll leave with an altered perspective and the tools to deliver remarkable outcomes for your business.

Learning outcomes:

  • Design a whole-workforce operating model: map strategic work, choose default worker types (FTE, Extended Workforce, agents) before demand hits.
  • Build pre-approved pathways: standing agreements, rate cards, and agent “ready lists” so work flows without delays.
  • Tier governance by performance: lighter checks for teams that plan and deliver well; tighter controls where risk or performance issues exist.
  • Plan and track benefits: Cost of Labour trend, CONP recovered, time from plan to work started, quality and risk outcomes.
